The Proverbs tell us we ought to "Train up a child in the way he (or she) should go...". This means we ought to raise our children to be responsible adults. Insted, it seems we are coddling our children to remain children indefinately. Even the terms we use re-enfore this. "Adult-children", for example, refers to our grown offspring. Is it not apparent to anyone else that this term is an oxymoron? How can one be both an adult and a child? One cannot be.
Likewise, an adolescent is NOT a child. Adolescence is a transition from childhood to adulthood. Evenso, an adolescent is not an adult, either. Historically, this period of transition, lasted about 3-5 years, from about 13-18. However, since the mid-twentieth century, adolecence has encreased to a period of ten years, or more. I have heard that it's now common for "Millenials", to remain home until age 30 and beyond. It seems that a failure to launch, has become the norm, rather than the exception. And parents are just going along with this new "normal", continuing to support their "adult-chindren" even at the expense of using up all their retirement. Ultimately, the parents die, unleasing these "children" on society. Is it any wonder the world is getting so fucked-up?
